As a person who has been in a committed long-term relationship with cosmetics I can assure that just like every other relationship it takes a lot of work and commitment. Oh and it can easily get pricey (I’ve had to scrape foundation from an empty bottle because a $60 bottle shouldn’t finished that fast). Anyway, I’m telling you this because when you use a lot of makeup products on your face you need to put in a little more effort into making sure your skin stays as healthy as possible. Good quality cleansing products, moisturizers and masks can be expensive so for a while now I’ve opted to make my own scrubs and masks. It is a great way to supplement your existing skincare routine while saving a lot of money (ahem, to buy more makeup with). Most of the ingredients used in homemade facial masks are all natural with amazing benefits. So I’ve curated a list of different DIY face masks for every skin type. These masks are easy to make and most are made from edible ingredients you have in your pantry.
If you have dry/sensitive skin, you should try:
Here’s why: Oatmeal isn’t just for a hearty breakfast. The use of oatmeal for skin care dates all the way back to the Roman Empire! Oatmeal contains hydrocolloids which seals in the skin’s moisture hence acting as an emollient. It also has anti-inflammatory, UV protection (thanks to antioxidants) and PH balancing properties. As for honey, it has natural anti-bacterial activity so it helps to soothe and protect the skin. These benefits make this mask excellent for individuals with sensitive or dry skin.
Here’s why: Avocado contains lots of Vitamin A, C and E, all of which are important for healthy skin. Vitamin E protects skin from weather damage and helps in brightening dark spots. Avocado has oleic acid which will reduce redness, irritation while keeping skin soft and hydrated. The lactic acid in yogurt exfoliates, soothes and leaves your skin a natural glow while the honey keeps your skin bacteria-free!
If you have problem/acne-prone skin, you should try:
Here’s why: Lemon juice is one of the best methods for naturally clearing up acne and hyperpigmentation. It is also great for reducing oiliness which is a big issue for many acne sufferers. The egg white helps to tighten the skin, maintain elasticity and shrink pores. This mask is great for healing as well as preventing future breakouts while maintaining a youthful appearance.
Here’s why: Many adult skin problems are worsened by our environment and foods we consume. Activated charcoal comes in handy because being the carbon that it is, it is excellent at absorbing impurities and toxins it comes in contact with. So when used as a mask, it will absorb whatever evil that has been lurking underneath your pores. Aloe vera contains gibberellin, a hormone that aids cell growth so skin renewal occurs quickly. Aloe also contains healing and hydrating properties which will work wonders for skin with chronic problems such as eczema.

Here’s why: Anyone with oily skin can tell you that it is a pain to deal with. Don’t even get me started on the constant blotting when you have makeup on or the perfectly-timed skin flare-ups (always before an event). One way to fight the grease is with clay. Yup, good old earthy matter could be the remedy to your problem. There are different types of clay that are used as face masks. Bentonite, French green and Montmorillonite (European) are the most common ones. Similar to charcoal, clay has superb absorbency which makes it ideal for those with oily or combination skin. Clay is also excellent in replenishing the skin with a variety of minerals while detoxing your skin. You will notice tighter pores, smoother, and best of all less shiny skin!

So it is a good idea to try a natural alternative like this coffee face mask. Similar to how caffeine boosts energy, a coffee-based mask rejuvenates the skin and keeps it looking brighter with less wrinkles. It also improves circulation, firms, tightens and reduces puffiness. Many people like to use face masks at night but give this one a try in the morning if you want to awaken your skin.
